What is Lorem Ipsum? History, Meaning and Why Designers Use It in 2026?

If you are a web designer, developer, or student, you must have seen this text - "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..." But what does it actually mean? Why does every designer use it? In this complete guide, I will explain the full history and meaning of Lorem Ipsum in simple English.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Simple Definition

Lorem Ipsum is dummy text used in the printing and web design industry. It is not a meaningful sentence. Its only job is to fill empty space when the original content is not ready. For example, if you are designing a website and the client has not sent the text yet, you can use Lorem Ipsum to make the layout look professional and complete.

History of Lorem Ipsum - From 45 BC to 2026

Many people think it is just random letters, but its history is over 2000 years old.

1. The Real Origin - Cicero in 45 BC

The origin of Lorem Ipsum comes from a Latin book written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. The book was called "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil). The original line was: "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..."

In English, it means - "There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain..."

2. How Did It Become Famous in 1960s and 1980s?

In the 1500s, an unknown printer scrambled this Latin text to create a type specimen book. He wanted to show fonts, not content, so he cut "dolorem" to "lorem". Later, in the 1960s, Letraset sheets used this text for print advertising. Then in 1985, Aldus PageMaker included it as default dummy text. Since then, it became the industry standard for all designers.

Why Do Designers Still Use Lorem Ipsum in 2026?

Even with Figma and WordPress, we still use it. Why?

• It Looks Like Real English: Unlike "asdfghjkl", it has a natural flow and distribution of letters, so the layout looks natural.
• Focus Stays on Design: If you use real readable news, the client will start reading the content instead of checking the design. With dummy text, the focus stays on the DESIGN.
• Balanced Letter Distribution: It has a normal distribution of letters, so paragraphs look balanced and professional.
